Staats Concerned About Spending Increases in Proposed Budget
HARRISBURG – Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) issued the following statement today on Gov. Josh Shapiro’s $48.3 billion proposed budget, which would increase state spending by 8.4%, or $3.7 billion, over the current fiscal year:
“While there are a few positives in this budget, specifically a significant increase to the Basic Education Fund (BEF), there are multiple items of concern inside this budget when you dig deeper. Gov. Shapiro is proposing new spending initiatives that add up to $2.5 billion that either expand current government programs or create new ones. I have specific concern with the fact that this spending increase will cut into Pennsylvania’s surplus and Rainy Day Fund according to his proposal.”
“Having nearly a decade worth of experience in Harrisburg, I know we can balance a budget without cutting into our $8 billion General Fund surplus and our Rainy Day fund because we have done it before. With the months of budget hearings and negotiations around this proposal ahead of us, I hope to see a strong, bi-partisan agreement on a budget that moves away from unnecessary spending and instead focuses on fiscal responsibility and securing Pennsylvania’s future.”
