HARRISBURG - Nearly two years ago, Rep. Craig Staats (R-Bucks) sent letters to Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) expressing concern about public health following the discovery of asbestos in the East Rockhill Quarry in East Rockhill Township, Bucks County. At issue was the release of airborne fibrous asbestos from mining and rock crushing activity that threatened the health and safety of nearby school students and residents.

Mining operations have been shut down since then, and today Staats said he is pleased to learn the mining lease between the quarry owner and the mining operator has been terminated, ensuring no mining activity will occur on the site for the foreseeable future.

“This is great news and a long-fought victory for all who have worked so hard to hold the owner and operators of the quarry accountable and protect the health and safety of those who live, work and attend school in the area,” said Staats.  “Absent a mining contract and while environmental officials are evaluating hazardous conditions at the site, activity at the quarry will remain idle. In the meantime, I will continue to monitor the situation and work with federal, state and local officials on a permanent solution.”
